An examination of 65 of the 3,000 largest utilities found cities such as Philadelphia, Boston, New York City, Providence, R.I., and Portland, Me., are “manipulating the results of tests used to detect lead in water, violating federal law and putting millions of Americans at risk,” The Washington Post said. More than 250 major cities currently exceed the EPA’s lead standards, and many of them have been deceptive, or even fraudulent in their reporting of the problems.
– NBC Nightly News

“Each day, millions of Americans turn on their taps and get water that exceeds the legal limits for dangerous contaminants.”
– USA Today, Special Report

Did you know. . .

• Water contaminated with viruses or bacteria can cause gastroenteritis, cancer, and reproductive/developmental issues

• There are up to 40 million waterborne illnesses annually

• Water becomes contaminated if there is a break in a water main

• Lead in drinking water may account for 20% of a person’s exposure

• Contaminated well water is present in all 50 states

How does water get contaminated?

• Any breach/rupture in the water mains (200,000 reported in 2002)

• Corroded pipes

• Overflowing/leaking septic tanks

• Pollution/Pesticide/Agricultural runoff

• The EPA only regulates 87 of the thousands of possible contaminants

Who is at risk?

• Children, elderly, pregnant women, and the immuno-compromised
• Anyone who drinks well-water or water that is otherwise unregulated
• Anyone in a disaster situation where the water source is breached

What can I do?

• Filter ALL tap water used for drinking through a charcoal filter to reduce lead, radon, and arsenic (especially if preparing baby formula)

• Know where your water comes from (Is it regulated by the city? Susceptible to agricultural runoff? )

• If applicable, pump/professionally inspect your septic tank regularly

• If you drink well water, have it tested annually by local Health Dept.

How Safe is YOUR Water?

Water is your single most important nutrient. You can survive a month without food, but only a few days without the life-giving properties of water. It is essential to your survival. But, are you sure that your drinking water is safe? Streams, ponds, rivers, lakes, and groundwater house biological and chemical waste products and provide a means to transport these chemicals to municipal water treatment plants where most of the contaminants are removed (“most” being the important word here). The city adds chlorine, which kills some of the bacteria. However, most treated water still contains pollutants, chlorine and germs. Treated water has been known to have bacteria, protozoa, and cryptosporidium. Chlorine also combines with compounds in water to create chloroform, chloramines other chemicals that can cause diseases.

Dozens of scientific studies have proven these dangers. The Council on Environmental Quality reported that chlorine in water increased the risk of urinary tract and gastrointestinal cancer! The CDC and EPA are also constantly releasing studies on the health risks related to municipal and tap water supplies. Water flows to your home or office through underground pipes that are often broken, damaged, have loose joints, or are decades old. These things break the waterways down thereby allowing additional contamination from groundwater laden with industrial chemicals. Dozens of these chemicals and live organisms have been found in processed tap water in major cities. For example, in 1993, in the city of Milwaukee, 400,000 people became ill from drinking water that, despite processing, still contained the deadly parasite cryptosporidium, and 104 people died! Scientists, Doctors, and government agencies (MUD Reports) have issued warnings on the unhealthy contamination of our public water supplies. The EPA has identified 253 organic chemicals in U.S. drinking water! However, recently the danger has become even worse!

Homeland Security Update

Since September 11, 2001, we have become aware that terrorists are intent on killing large numbers of Americans with chemical or biological sabotage. Authorities and Government Agencies warn us that terrorists may contaminate our public water supplies. Now it is even more critical that every family drink, cook, and prepare beverages with water that has not been just “filtered”, but has been PURIFIED by removing deadly organisms such as cryptosporidium or anthrax. Get your Biological Water Filter Bottle

Is Bottled Water The Answer?

Many have turned to bottled water as a way to avoid the dangers of drinking from the tap. But recent reports show that many brands of bottled water fail to meet industry guidelines and the cost of even low quality bottled water can grow very high. You could pay anywhere from $4 to $16 per gallon for bottled water! Bottled water is costly and it is not enough to protect us from the current dangers of a contaminated water supply. A Portable Water Filter makes much more sense.

How do I clean my bottle and filter?

Level 1 and Level 2 Bottles: These water filter bottles can be cleaned when you feel it needs to be cleaned. It is not necessary to clean the bottles after every use. We recommend cleaning the bottles about twice a month. DO NOT USE SOAP ON OR NEAR THE FILTER OR FILTER HOUSING. You can remove the filter from the bottle and wash the bottle with soap and water. You can also put the bottle in the dishwasher, but be careful not to use the heat cycle as it might melt the bottle. To clean the filter: You can drop the filter in a pot of boiling water for a few seconds to disinfect it if you wish, though it is not necessary. Harmful bacteria or other organisms cannot grow on the filter or in the filter.

Biological Bottle: Directions for cleaning, storing, and disinfecting the Biological Bottle will come on the information sheet when you purchase your bottle. Please read this sheet carefully prior to use.

Additional Information for Health Care Providers

According to the CDC, there are 900,000 or more cases of waterborne illness diagnosed annually, about 900 of which are fatal.

Most waterborne illnesses (cholera, typhus, dysentery, E. coli, etc.) are thwarted by the addition of chlorine to city water (this is ineffective if there is a breach in a water main)

In some states, more than half of the population drinks from unregulated water sources.

Who is at Risk?

Children are at risk because they drink more water per unit of weight than adults, and they metabolize and excrete toxins less efficiently.

Older adults are at risk because of decreased blood flow to liver and kidneys.

Anyone drinking well water (where bacteria may be present), or water from an unregulated source (where possible biological contaminants are not killed by properly regulated water treatment facilities).

Those who may be drinking from a water source where a water main has unknowingly been breached (especially rural areas).

Common Contaminants

Common bacterial contaminants include: Legionella, E. Coli, Cryptosporidium, Giardia intestinalis, Campylobacter jejuni, and Salmonella.

Viruses may also contaminate water, and are much less susceptible to chlorine disinfection. It is likely, however, that many cases of diagnosed “viral stomach flu” are actually a result of the above noted bacterial water contaminants.

Halogenated hydrocarbons (in adhesives, paint, and spot removers) are among the most common water supply contaminants in this country. Even low-level exposure may have teratogenic effects, cause immune dysfunction, or lead to kidney and liver damage.

Lead is neurotoxic, and effects on children are especially detrimental. Even low levels may cause decreases in IQ and changes in peripheral nerve function. Infants and young children exposed to lead may have cognitive and physical developmental delays, as well as learning disabilities. ENCOURAGE PARENTS OF INFANTS TO USE FILTERED OR DISTILLED WATER WHEN PREPARING BABY FORMULA. Exposure in adults leads to kidney problems and hypertension. The CDC considers venous blood levels of 10mcg/dL as elevated, but acknowledges that symptoms may not be seen until upwards of 60mcg/dL.

What can I do?

Obtain your patient’s drinking water history, and consider waterborne illness when diagnosing gastroenteritis. Encourage them to be vigilant about water testing if you suspect water contamination.

ENCOURAGE PARENTS OF INFANTS TO USE FILTERED OR DISTILLED WATER WHEN PREPARING BABY FORMULA.

Is Bottled Water Better?

Bottled water is not necessarily safer than tap water; up to 25% of the bottled water in the U.S. is actually tap water. Furthermore, bottled water falls under the jurisdiction of the FDA as opposed to the EPA, and has significantly less rigorous standards with regards to possible contaminants contained therein.

In recent years, partly due to the increased consumption of plastic water bottles, plastic bottle waste has dramatically increased in landfills. For more information, see the following articles and graphics:
